Maria & The Mirrors
Maria & The Mirrors appeared in Deptford, London one night in 2008 following years of studying the ‘Netto’ style of shamanic drum invocation in the Siberian islands of Novaya Zemlya. Eyewitnesses reported sequins, seashells and the unmistakable smell of Elnette wafting right down the high street.
The Mirrors update this traditional style, influenced by the likes of Hanatarash Throbbing Gristle, treating all sounds electronically and fused with whirring concrete tape sounds harvested from around London Town like Pierre Schaeffer on a bad day.
These combine with visceral double drum attack and nagging vocal melodies recalling Yoko Ono and Gang Gang Dance —- Netto Disco Sound! Complemented by a luridly glamorous/tropical visual and sartorial look inspired by the likes of Kenneth Anger, Roxy Music and Sister Sledge.
They are renowned for inducing trance - like states apon their audiences with their polyrhythmic, pounding, repetitive beats and chants.
Since 2008 they have performed their recitals all over London and UK and have recently returned from a German tour supporting John Maus. They additionally have
performed at this years British Art show 7 and also performed as part of international Artist Keren Cytter Festival at the Globe in Frankfurt.
Maria & the Mirrors follow up 2010’s ‘Omar’ 7” with the Travel Sex EP on Parlour Records, out late June 2011. ’Travel Sex’ is a true document of their visceral live
shows where pounding dancehall rhythms combine with nagging vocal melodies & bursts of pummeling power electronics.
Throbbing electronica that rattles the brain. 7/10 NME
Sounding like a half-broken ghost train hurtling towards its trapped prey, the end result is a band who’ve used every last fibre in their bodies to make something as whole-heartedly different as possible to everything else around.Artrocker
